Nostradamus and the End of the World in 2012

Here are some articles I wrote during the last years, about Nostradamus, and how his prophecies maybe were not prophecies at all, and how they are still used to go into politics. - About Nostradamus, Obama and the AntiChrist
What faith should we place in predictions of Nostradamus concerning a black president and the end of the world in 2012? The answer is: none! But nevertheless, there are circulating on the internet some really idiotic rumours...
From now to the year 3797...
There are countless sites stating Nostradamus "predicted" the End of the World in 2012. This is nonsense, written down by people who are simply copy-pasting what others have said, without even reading the prophecies of Nostradamus. This is what Nostradamus wrote in the preface to his prophecies (that was, in fact, a letter to his son Ceasar): "I have composed books of prophecies, containing each one hundred astronomic quatrains of forecasts, which I have tried to polish through obscurely, and which are perpetual vaticinations, from now to the year 3797. It is possible that this figure will make some lift up their forehead, at such a vast extent of time, and variety of things to take place under the concave journey of the moon; and this universal treatment of causes, my son, throughout the earth, which, if you reach the natural age of man, you will see in your climate, under the heaven of your proper nativity, as things that have been foreseen."

The Lost Book of Nostradamus
Nostradamus 2012: End of the World Prophesy states that new writings of Nostradamus have been found: "They obviously aren't ‘new', but they have previously been hidden. The revelations that the most famous medieval prophet wrote were controversial and considered blasphemous in his time. A previously unknown book of Nostradamus' prophesies has been found in the National Library and it contains his end of the world prophesy. The History Channel is airing a new show focusing on his predictions about 2012. The show, The Lost Book of Nostradamus, will premiere January 4, 2009. A video about the show is included here."
Obviously, this is a hoax. Nostradamus has predicted events until 3797, in a book published centuries ago... Why should he have written and published all these prophecies from the 16th century to 3797, if he knew - according to this "lost book" - that the world would end in 2012?

- Mayan Calendar
The Mayan Calendar does not predict the 2012 end of the world scenario. It's a calendar system. Brilliant, no doubts. But developed as a means of measuring time. Not the end of it. - 2012 End Of The World
2012 end of the world. Apparently. The Maya a long-dead civilization seemingly predicted that the end of the year 2012 will bring about some cataclysmic changes or events.
Somehow, the 2012 Doomsday Craze seems to have started with the Mayan Calendar, ending in 2012. But, as frogdropping said it in one of his two great hubs on the subject (follow the links!), that the Mayan calendar does come to an end in 2012, doesn't have to mean the world will end in 2012. The Calendar just stopped in 2012... and that's all, folks.
The Mayan Calendar is thought to be a "prophetic calendar that may help us understand the past and foresee the future". Quoting frogdropping ('cause I couldn't say it better): "I haven't read anything as misleading as that (honest) since the last time I read a ‘buy one get one free' offer. The calendar is not prophetic. It was devised to measure time. I'm not saying that the Mayan shamans didn't try to foresee coming seasons, what their Gods were up to and what they should do to keep their Gods happy. But it's basic priniciple was that of a calendar."
If, indeed, the Mayan Calendar was "prophetic"... which were then the facts of the past centuries, predicted by the Calender? And how do you explain the Maya's knew the exact year when "the" world will come to an end... but did not know "their" world would meet its end centuries before?

- 2012 Prophecies: The End Is Nigh! Again.
Having been born in the '60's I, like many of you, have seen numerous dates on which the world was to end, come and go without drama or incident. So what is it that makes December 21, 2012 different? ... - The Greatest Hoax Of The 21st Century: 2012 Armageddon

- Lunar Eclipse, June 4 = Earthquakes?
Last year I undertook a long and tedious task that seemingly nobody else has done. I checked every lunar and solar eclipse since 1973, and I checked them against every earthquake measuring 6.5 or greater in magnitude. I would have gone further back, but that’s the limit for comprehensive USGS records. For solar eclipses, there was a slight increase of major earthquakes, but not enough to make it worthy of further investigation. Lunar eclipses were quite different, with the odds of a major earthquake doubling within a few days: M6.5+ … normal is an average of one every 8.4 days Within four days of a lunar eclipse, averages one every 7.26 days Within one day of a lunar eclipse, averages one every 5.87 days M7.5+ … normal is an average of one every 73.8 days Within twenty days of a lunar eclipse, averages one every 51.6 days Within four days of a lunar eclipse, averages one every ...Your're reading Lunar Eclipse, June 4 = Earthquakes? by Robert Bast, and originally posted at 2012 Blog
- Potentially Hazardous Asteroids
Until recently the NASA mantra regarding an asteroid impact in 2012 went like this: We already know there is no asteroid large enough to produce a mass extinction that is in an Earth-crossing orbit today. We have found at least 90% of those large enough to threaten civilization. NASA is referring to asteroids wider than 1 kilometer. So far they have discovered 843 of those large asteroids (as of May 2012), and figure that accounts for 93% of them. Or, for a more worrisome description, they believe there are still 64 asteroids out there that can threaten civilization, and we don’t know where. Lesser asteroids can still cause significant harm. NASA is also looking for medium-sized asteroids that are between 100 meters and 1 kilometer in diameter. They are “big enough to survive passing through Earth’s atmosphere and cause damage on a regional, or greater, scale“. This is especially true if they cause ...Your're reading Potentially Hazardous Asteroids by Robert Bast, and originally posted at 2012 Blog

I loved how Tom said chicken little...how true! Yes there is always explanations for these things. And as far as Christians believe from their BIBLE that ONLY GOD knows the time and date for the Apocolypse, End of Days, Armeggedon...whatever you call it! So I truly believe that 2012 will be just another year as always. However, I do believe in Bible Prophecy and that only common sense tells you that we are in fact in "the last days" due to world events coinsiding with prophecies show the end of a System is near...not the end of the world....
This is extremely helpful -- to be completely honest, I really was feeding myself with the contraries of opposing sides on TV shows like the History channel, where they seem fixated on future events that have been predicted by several ancient cultures. Considering Nostradamus has concluded the end of the world is not indeed 2012 although it may be a very roughening day, I'm still just a little weary about the situation and wish I held more knowledge to really gather a more legit opinion...Because, regardless of what is said, I'm pretty certain I am still going to dread the coming day of December 21st and be extremely relieved if I'm alive after it!
Dutchman this is good stuff. And you're about the net a bit too! Like me but shhhhhh! Nice to see another sensible de-bunker ... and get rid of my links. Don't encourage anyone to stop my way - I'm incredibly boring! I will link your hub on my blog :)
You seem to be sensationalizing 2012 as a doomsday strawman. The Mayan calendar doesn't end on December 21st, 2012, it merely restarts its Baktun cycle from 0, currently being in the 13th. Bolon Yokte, a Mayan deity associated with the underworld, war, and contention is said to descend at this time (4 Ahau according to Mayan dating, with a particular Mayan codice interpreting "His speech is shameless" for that date). The History Channel never seems to represent the substantial prophetic facts for the occult, or even the Revelation of Christian scripture.
Also, keep in mind that the Mayans DID foretell the demise of their civilization.
Hi,
many of the forecasts of Nestrodomous had come true in the past but not all.
Thanks for a thought provoking hub.

Hi!
If predictions are to be believed then one thing I would like to mention that even a satelite sent from the earth will hamper with the predictions.
Hence, the science of Vaastu has gained worldwide acceptance.

I am already sick of hearing about 2012. Nothing will happen, just like Y2K!
Its all a money makng scheme that enterprises build upon to feed on your fear
i don't think so that imagination abt 2012 is folk
because whatever we said & whatever we do is somewhere related to our earth however that happened in past ,in present or in future
@PATRICK; personally I am in doubt about the "Letter to Ceasar" which you are referring to and which seems only published in the later prints of The Prophesies. Reading it with my near non-existing French and translation; it does not sound like Nostradamus talking. Amongst others, there are a few personal references "Me as your father" and the section about 'Me not a prophet' that just does not fit in with his other writings; i.e. to England and medicals. I might be wrong. I would appreciate you (aangesien jy Vlaams is en waarskynlik ook Frans praat) having a careful look. I am far away in Thailand and real documents are non-exisiting here. Hope to hear from you. Groete.
Hi.
I read the Complete Prophecies of Nostradamus a few years back and there was no sign of him saying that the world would end in 2012 (although his words are difficult to decifer) so I was surprised by the link.
Thanks for sharing.

Good hub....2012 may bring drastic change and a new beginning..."The End" is so overused and unfounded. We have thousands of Chicken Little book writers and movie producers who are stuffing their pockets by selling fear. The world will change...it always has.
